But I’m Not Creative!
Well, I beg to differ.
Creativity is a loaded word. A much misunderstood word. Haunted by ghosts of art teachers past. Weighted with words uttered by well-meaning parents concerning arty crafty things being airy fairy things.
The Goddess of Creativity
A word inspired by Ceres. Roman goddess of fertility and harvest. A word limited by our imaginations. A word rooted in “creare”. Latin for: To make. To bring forth. To produce. To procreate. To cause. A word with a goddess of the people at its source. Not a handful of chosen ones.
The Care of Disappearing Creativity
Because creativity is innate in everyone. That’s not a whimsical claim. There’s a longitudinal study — originally devised for NASA. Wherein it was discovered that 98% of 1,600 children aged 4 to 5 were essentially creative geniuses. 5 years later it was 30%. Dropping to 12% 5 years after that. Astonishing, no?
And then, when the test was extended to adults? Well less than 2% scored at genius level. So, perhaps there’s a truth to your assertion: I’m not creative! Yet, the study’s co-creator has a solution. A remedy. Yes, you can reclaim this precious ability. How? Judge less. Be more curious instead.
Re-Member Who You Are
So forget Michelangelo masterpieces. Think childish wonder. Here, creativity means having a curious mind and a willingness to explore. Yes, your journal is a book. But to journal is a process too. A journey. An adventure. Not a picture-perfect destination. A place to find your creative flow. A magical way to re-member your birth right.
